Numero Un:

I reviewed The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (Sanaa Hamri, 200eight) for Film Threat. I liked the second Sister Pants much more than the first one. I might write more about the film at a later date but for now, here’s the concluding paragraph:

I’d also like to acknowledge the work of Jim Denault, Dona Granata, George DeTitta Jr., Andrew Max Cahn, and Gae S. Buckley for giving the film a rich and high quality look in terms of cinematography, costume design, set decoration, art direction, and production design. Appearances aren’t everything, but when there are teenaged girls and matters of the heart and soul involved, then the way a movie looks is as significant as the story it tells. For Carmen, Tibby, Lena, and Bridget, their sisterhood shines even brighter the second time around.

Product Placement & Branding: FedEx (the most visually blatant and narratively functional), Dominoes Pizza, Little Debbie cakes (I don’t think they were Hostess cakes), Cyndi Lauper (specifically, the song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun“), Etnies, old Folgers coffee can, iPod, Magnetic Poetry, The Reaping film poster (also distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures), white T-mobile cell phone (belonging to Tibby), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (2003), Hannah Montana/Cheetah Girls’ BYou exercise video, P.S. I Love You film cover (I don’t think it was Dear Frankie because PS was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Dear Frankie was not), New York University, Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, Yale, and the London School of Economics (in conversation).

Numero Deux:

The 2008 pre-season of NFL football commenced one day after the start of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. How serendipitous. The refreshed, re-blooded Atlanta Falcons went to Jacksonville to go up against the Jaguars at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Each of Atlanta’s quarterbacks had some field-time to demonstrate their skills. Chris Redman went first, followed by rookie Matt Ryan, Luke Wilson-look-alike Joey Harrington, and veteran D.J. Shockley (who spent last season rehabilitating a knee). The Jaguars’ quarterback line-up was David Garrard, Cleo Lemon, and Todd Bouman. With two touchdowns (courtesy of Garrard himself and Lemon to running back Chauncey Washington) and two field goals (by Josh Scobee), the Jaguars would beat the Falcons 20 to 17.

It still felt great to watch Atlanta play. Their seventeen points came from two touchdowns (thanks to Ryan to wide receiver Roddy White and Harrington himself) and one field goal (by Jason Elam).

Observations & Miscellania:

1. myATLtv televised the game.

2. Towards the latter half of the game, Matt Ryan and Chris Redman were on the sidelines smiling. Both wore white visors and looked like twins.

3. Most if not all of the rookies that signed my towel in June got some field time on Saturday.

4. Brian Baldinger and Randy Waters provided commentary for the game. In the second quarter, after the Jaguars put up three points with a field goal, Baldinger mentioned that Matt Ryan’s chinstrap was “buckled from the sidelines to the huddle,” but when he becomes a veteran player, “that thing will be dangling until the very last minute.” Made me chuckle.

5. Russell Athletic provided the score bar atop the screen. There was no 1st and Ten line on the field nor was there a blue line of scrimmage.

It sure feels great to watch football again–even with periodically shoddy televised camerawork.

Tune in to Fox Thursday night (August 14) for the Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles game and Friday night (August 15) for the Oakland Raiders at Tennessee Titans.
