NFL News and a Photo

I wonder what constitutes “high level of intensity, player aggressiveness and fast pace of…practices” that would compel the Oakland Raiders to sit out practices next week.

Former GaTech wide receiver Calvin Johnson decided to go pro after finishing his junior year as an undergrad. He signed with the Detroit Lions. Here are highlights from a little Q&A from the Lions official site.

Q: What were your first impressions when you visited the Lions’ facility in April?
A: “The first time when I came to the facility (I realized) that there aren’t many places like this – up kept like it is. All the people here are great people so it was a good experience.”

Q: What has your impression been now that you have been in Allen Park for the past couple months?
A: “When I got to be here to learn, especially with my receivers, and then being able to practice with the guys, I noticed the tempo was really twice as fast as it was in college. Everybody up here on this level is good and that’s what I expected so it either makes you a better player or worse player. It just depends on how much you’ve got to compete.”

Q: As a rookie, have you been picked on yet?
A: “No, I don’t really get picked on. Just doing what I’ve got to do. I believe that I don’t have to worry about that, but being a rookie there’s probably going to be something. Somebody’s going to mess with me.”

Q: Is there anyone on the team you have clicked with so far?
A: “All the rookies I’m really cool with. As far as the other guys on the team, there’s a lot of people I’m cool with just because I get along with everybody. I have no problems with anybody, whoever they may be. That’s why I feel that I’m such a likable person.”

One of the waiters at a Chinese restaurant I went to recently for dinner told me that he knew of Calvin Johnson. I’m not sure how well, but well enough to say that he’s a really nice and cool guy–hence how easily he would get along with his new teammates. And as for not being picked on, the man is 6’5”. I can’t imagine that he would be the ideal target for some rookie rough-housing. The waiter also told me that Calvin Johnson has enormous hands. And you know what that means….long fingers.

Clearly not Calvin Johnson. It’s a pug puppy. There will be a pug mascot for this blog eventually.
