World Series 2010: Game 1 Giants tuna steak the Rangers

Such a feeling’s coming over me, I have started to watch baseball again.  True, I might just be bored, sure, it could be a phase still I’m thrilled to see the Giants win today.

In case those lines sounded remotely sing-songy to you, it’s because I was re-interpreting the first verse of “Top of the World.”  I watched the entire first game of the 2010 World Series.  The Texas Rangers demonstrated offensive and defensive prowess through the first 5.5 innings, at which point the San Francisco Giants got their batting mojo back.  By the top of the ninth inning, even though the Rangers were able to narrow the score gap from 11-4 to 11-7, there was little doubt that the Giants would take Game 1 victory.

Rangers pitchers for the evening: Cliff Lee, Darren O’Day, Alexi Ogando, Mark Lowe, and Michael Kirkman.

Giants pitchers for the evening: Tim Lincecum, Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo, Javier Lopez, Ramon Ramirez, Jeremy Affeldt, and Brian Wilson.
Observations & Miscellania:

1.  The last time the Giants saw World Series action, Adrien Brody and Nicole Kidman had won Academy Awards.

2.  Ozzie Guillen wore a gigantic, sparkly ring on his right ring finger.

3.  Where are the Rangers fans in the stands?

4.  Those Rangers are a handsome lot.  Are they getting booed?!

5.  Why does Rangers catcher Bengie Molina get the loudest applause?

6.  There’s a female announcer (PA system)?

7.  John Legend sang the National Anthem; his rendition was solid but not very epic.

8.  Commentary was provided by Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

9. Who narrated the “Home” piece by Ken Burns that was spoken over a montage sequence before the game began?

10.  Is college baseball as popular as college hockey?  I never hear about college baseball the way I do college football and basketball.

11.  I remember televised baseball in the 90s as having more views of the batter in profile and in long shot.  His entire body filled the screen, his head was turned towards screen right, towards the off-screen pitcher.  The catcher and umpire were on the left side of the screen.

12. Giants infielder Freddy Sanchez broke his bat while hitting a Cliff Lee ball.  Sanchez is the first baseball player to hit three doubles in his first three at bats.  Felicitations!

13.  Cliff Lee is dreamy.

14.  Do baseball players/teams get a discount or a tax deduction on all of their chewable treats?  Tobacky, gum, dried apricots, gummy bears?

15.  Joe Buck on Nolan Ryan: “Has there ever been a more intimidating club president?”

16.  Is Tim Lincecum wearing Onitsuka Tiger shoes? The ones with the stripes on the side?

17.  The Coke bottle behind the ball park is a slide.

18.  When you hit the ball and the pitcher catches it, how awkward is it to go through the motions of going to first base?  What’s the point when you know you’re out?  If the pitcher catches the ball you just hit, you should just trot back to the dugout, no?

19.  Oh, look! Barry Bonds in the house.

20.  Lincecum retrieved a blue Gatorade bottle after he was finished for the night.

21.  Tony Bennett sang “God Bless America” in the bottom of the 7th inning.  He was amazing.  He’s eighty-four years old!

22.  Joe Montana in the house!

23.  I’ll be watching Game 2 for sure.
