For Colored Skyline Girls

I watched Skyline (2010) on Saturday and For the Colored Girls (2010) on Sunday.  Mismatched? Yes.  Divergent cinematic experiences? Absolutely.

The former was terrible…not of cult appreciation stature but arguably so-bad-it’s-ridiculously-funny.  Sigh.  The latter, adapted and directed by Tyler Perry, was engaging.  The source material is a play called for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf: a choreopoem by Ntozake Shange.  Fan or no fan of Mr. Perry’s directorial efforts, he somehow pulled this one off–the incorporating of lyrical “spectacle” and narrative development.  Were this film not based on a previously published work, one might say Tyler Perry is now punishing everyone for their indiscretions, for their self-loathing, and for their low self-respect.

Check back for more thoughts…which will hopefully be posted later today.
