I love Gentlemen’s Quarterly

Specifically, Mark Harris and his thoughts on “The Day the Movies Died.”

I don’t know what to do with my weekends with football season over; I can’t find it in my voyeuristic heart to watch televised basketball.

I read Mark Harris’s article with much interest. He analyses very well exactly why Hollywood produces the sorts of films it now produces, which, simply, is because society has changed. Therefore, what Hollywood produces has had to change too, and has done so quite successfully. Given that box office revenues have doubled over the last 15 years, Hollywood must be doing something right.

In view of our exchange of a few weeks ago, I took note that Mark Harris also thinks, as do I, that Hollywood films are aimed at young males.

Here’s my suggestion: Spend your weekends reading Jonathan Franzen’s latest novel “Freedom” (that is, if you haven’t yet read it). It’s a big novel with characters so well drawn that you’ll feel you’ve met them before. And it explores some of the big public issues and ideas of our day.

It’s the best novel I read in many years. I can’t recommend it too highly.

I’ve got a stack of books to finish reading. I’ve actually spent the last few weekends drawing. I want to take a road trip (no more than 5-7 hrs of driving) but haven’t found a destination yet. Or rather, I haven’t decided on a destination yet.
