Memorial Day Weekend 2012: Shawarmas, Flying Monkeys, and the Pretty in Pink Dad

Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers is the first film I’ve seen this year thus far.  I enjoyed it very much.  Stay after the credits–all of the credits.

Show of hands, how many of you knew about and even have had a shawarma before watching this film?  I knew.  I’ve had.  How many of you knew the “flying monkeys” reference?  Or recognized Harry Dean Stanton, the father from Pretty in Pink (Howard Deutch, 1986) as the security guard that saw the Hulk fall from the sky?

Image cred: Yahoo movies.  Reinterpreted by me.
