But first. Michael MacCambridge drew me a farm animal.
And now back to your regularly scheduled blog post:
The Atlanta Falcons side-stepped westward to face the New Orleans Saints in the first regular season game of 2013 (broadcast on Fox). Kenny Albert and Daryl Johnston provided commentary. The Falcons were playing to the Saints’ fans’ liking until about six minutes into the game when quarterback Matt Ryan threw a fifty-two yard pass to wide receiver Harry Douglas, bringing the predatory birds within twenty yards of the end zone. The Falcons soon hurled seven points on the scoreboard, courtesy of wide receiver Tony Gonzalez. Their next go at the end zone resulted in a field goal. Atlanta 10 and New Orleans 0.
The Saints responded with a field goal five minutes into the second quarter. Shortly thereafter, the Saints recovered a fumbled Julio Jones ball and tied the game with a touchdown. Atlanta 10 and New Orleans 10. Going into halftime, the Saints took the lead with another field goal. New Orleans 13 and Atlanta 10. Three minutes into the third quarter Falcons running back Steven Jackson barreled down the field fifty yards; a few plays later, Matt Ryan connected with Julio Jones for a TD. Redemption. Atlanta 17 and New Orleans 13. The Saints were not intimidated as tight end Jimmy Graham outstretched his hands across the goal line for a TD. New Orleans 20 and Atlanta 17.
The fourth quarter gave the Saints a bigger lead with another FG with three minutes left to play. The Falcons got themselves to the seven yard line…and then the three yard line…and no luck for the birds. New Orleans 23 and Atlanta 17. Final score.
Observations & Miscellania:
1. The graphics that appeared on screen beneath Kenny Albert and Daryl Johnston when they introduced themselves included their Twitter handles. I don’t recall this information included on the same graphic last season.
2. Tony Siragusa‘s button-down shirt looked like pajama top: blue, white plaid.
3. Tony Gonzalez dunked the ball over the cross beam after his first quarter TD. The uprights looked mighty neon today.
4. Overheard viewer: Every time I look up, Matt Ryan is getting up off his ass.
