It Was Too Cold for Primates

at the zoo today.  I went to Zoo Atlanta today to take advantage of a ticket discount special that ends on Leap Day.  I went three years ago and saw the primates but it was too cold today, so they were all inside.  Since the last time I visited, Zoo Atlanta has welcomed a bald eagle into its midst and I’ve wanted to go see him these many months.  He’s a beauty.

Of course, I went to see the pandas.  Mei Lun and Mei Huan were just about to go back inside.

These animals are not racoons; they are tanuki.

I enjoyed spending time with the animals, being closer to them than I ever would be even in the lands of their natural habitats…but I have to wonder what they see when we humans walk by.  Zookeepers notwithstanding.  Do they find it odd not to be protecting territory or migrating yearly to follow the wildebeasts running towards water?
