Opinions Out Loud

Or rather singing them and it sounds like one is doing so through a mask or halfway through the chubby bunny challenge of yesteryear.  I came across this song called “Is It Just Me” by Sasha Sloan and the lyrics stir up the critic in all of us.  How many times have you wondered quietly or aloud any of the things she sings about?

Lyrics:

Is it just me? (x2)

I hate holding babies
And people tryna save me
Think religion is a business
Where you pay for God’s forgiveness
Modern art is boring
Politicians are annoying
I don’t think love lasts forever
And old music was better

Am I just high or am I kinda right?

Chorus:
Is it just me or does anybody

Feel the way that I feel
They’re just not being real
Is it just me or is anybody
Thinkin’ all the same shit
They’re just not sayin’ it
Or is it just me?

Is it just me? (x2)

Weddings are outdated
The show Friends was overrated
I think rich kids have it easy
And PDA is creepy
The internet’s obnoxious
People my age make me nauseous
I think marijuana’s classy
And doing coke is trashy

Am I just high or am I kinda right?

Is it just me or does anybody
Feel the way that I feel
They’re just not being real
Tell me is it just me or is anybody
Thinkin’ the all same shit
They’re just not sayin’ it
Or is it just me?

Is it just me? (x2)

Bridge:
I should probably bite my tongue but

I can’t be the only one
I should probably bite my tongue but
I can’t be the only one or

Is it just me or does anybody
Feel the way that I feel
They’re just not being real
Tell me is it just me or is anybody
Thinkin’ all the same shit
They’re just not sayin’ it
Or is just me?

Is it just me? (x2)

I should probably bite my tongue but
I can’t be the only one
I should probably bite my tongue but
I can’t be the only one

Some of the lines, especially when read as opposed to heard, come across as included for the sake of the rhyme scheme or not that controversial (or even unpopular). The title of the song is grammatically incorrect. It should be “Is It Just I” — forms of “to be” (am, are, was, were) are linking verbs and linking verbs have no objects. “Me” is an object. To convey correctly that an external source makes you feel like you’re going to puke is for that source to make you “nauseated” or feel “nauseated.” Saying “make me nauseous” means that you are the one that compels others to want to vomit.

If I could rewrite the lyrics, I’d go with the following:

Is it just me? (x2)

I hate hearing babies
Some people want to save me
Think religion is a cure-all
Where’s God in man’s great downfall
Modern art is pricey
Politicians can’t stop whining
Common courtesy undercover
And old movies were better

Am I just high or am I kinda right?

Is it just me or does anybody
Feel the way that I feel
They’re just not being real
Is it just me or is anybody
Thinkin’ all the same shit
They’re just not sayin’ it
Or is it just me?

Is it just me? (x2)

Weddings are but rituals
Has Friends really aged well
Rich kids have their issues
And PDA’s so 80s
The internet’s gone down hill
My peers are so embarrassing
The war on drugs is futile
Boardrooms have gone senile

Am I just high or am I kinda right?

Chorus

Is it just me? (x2)

I should probably bite my tongue but
I can’t be the only one
I should probably bite my tongue but
I can’t be the only one or
